RECREATING A LOST WORLD
Film, Oral History and the Memory of the Shtetl: how can we tell the story of a world that no longer exists?
On 1 October at 19:00, the Žanis Lipke Memorial welcomes filmmaker and artist Shoshana Simons for an evening of film, photography and conversation around her evolving docu-fiction project The Shtetl Multiverse.
The project explores the lost Jewish shtetl world of Eastern Europe through a fluid combination of documentary material and fiction. At its centre are Rivke (Alla Gutnikova) and Estie (Rosamond Van Wingerden), two women who exist simultaneously in the present and as echoes of two friends who once lived in Žagarė, Lithuania, a century ago.
Simons brings together oral history, photography, staged scenes, dance, dialogue and voice-over to explore belonging, inherited memory and the possibility of imagining a world one has never personally known.
During the evening, she will introduce the project and its historical context and present photographs and behind-the-scenes material created between Berlin and Žagarė. We will also screen the first short film in the series, developed from more than 50 hours of interviews with women across the Yiddish diaspora, followed by a conversation with Shoshana Simons and an audience Q&A.
The event also opens a broader question for museums and memory institutions: how can interviews, photographs and fragments of documentation be transformed into a meaningful experience of communities that no longer exist? Where is the boundary between historical reconstruction and artistic imagination?
The conversation has particular resonance in the Baltic region, where the recently opened Lost Shtetl Museum in Šeduva, Lithuania, has brought renewed attention to how the vanished Jewish world of the shtetl can be presented to contemporary audiences.
